Kennedy Creative Events Team Spotlight: Molly Mulally, Event Producer
Event production is not for the faint of heart — it takes tenacity, creativity, attention to detail and a knack for both planning far ahead and thinking on your feet. So, as we grow our team, we look for the best event producers in Austin and beyond, who are able to blend that unmistakable mix of skills and talent into the singular, seamless ability to wow every client they encounter. That’s exactly the phenomenon we noticed when we first met Molly Mulally, and we knew we had to have her for ourselves. Read on to learn more about one of the latest and greatest additions to the Kennedy Creative Events team.
How did you become interested in the events industry?
As with most people in the events world, I fell into it. Everything about my life has been centered around check lists, being a few steps ahead, having a plan. And a back-up plan. While I started out in the marketing realm of the business world, my first taste of the events space came during my time as an Assistant Director of MBA Admission for a university in Santa Clara, CA. As I took on the tasks of planning their new student orientations, information sessions, and career fairs, I knew this is something I wanted to do more of. After a move to San Diego, I joined a CEO membership company, first planning their training programs and then joining their Corporate Events team, where I remained for five years. After taking a year to travel and reset my career plans, I decided that my next step would be to work for an events firm.
What led you to Austin, and how did you first learn about Kennedy?
Austin has been on my radar for years. After traveling here for my previous job, I fell more and more in love with this quirky, welcoming town. The food, the music, the people – all of it. And, I did not know a soul when I moved here. While it may seem odd (and scary) to move where you no one, I found it an exhilarating challenge and welcomed it. Once I decided Austin was my new home, finding an events firm was next on my list. It didn’t take long for me to figure out that Kennedy was the most respected and established firm here in town. After reaching out on a whim, I flew to Austin two weeks later, and convinced them that I was their next producer. I would also like to mention that I put down a rental deposit the day before my final interview – I was sure to manifest the heck out this opportunity!
What does your day-to-day agenda look like? Walk us through a day in the life of one of the best event producers in Austin.
Any given day, I am confirming the many activations and vendors that go into each event. I am creating production schedules and contingency plans. I am attending tastings, siting venues, and working closely with the client on any adjustments and/or additions leading up to each event. On event day, I am working a crazy schedule to ensure all goes smoothly – the satisfaction of a successful event, though? Worth those hours!
What, for you, are the traits or trademarks of great event production?
Time management and multitasking are major skills needed for this industry. There are many, many moving pieces for all of our events, and the ability to stay on top of all of it, efficiently, is mandatory. No matter how much we plan, something will always go off plan. Learning to roll with it, while maintaining your composure is key (even when it’s not easy!). Even more importantly, though, are the relationships we build with our customers and the level of service we provide.
What’s your favorite district or neighborhood in the city?
I put down roots on South Lamar and I must say – it’s a dream. I don’t use my car on the weekends (unless I need to go to Target, obviously), and my favorite coffee shop, movie theatre, nail salon, restaurant, and bar are all within reach. Each time a friend visits, though, I make sure to explore outside of my zip code. I am digging the East Side and can’t get away with not visiting South Congress at least once every other week. My favorite spot is June’s All Day – have you seen their rosé menu?!
What’s your favorite part of working at Kennedy?
Hands down, the team. These people are some of the hardest-working, responsible, professional, and joyful colleagues I’ve had the pleasure to work with. A close second would be the relationships I build each day with our incredible vendors, venues, and clients. Being somewhat fresh to Austin, I am constantly thankful to be welcomed with such open arms to this family and city.
